Srinagar, Aug 30: A mountaineering expedition to Mount Nun in Ladakh turned tragic after heavy snowfall claimed the life of Kamal Mondal, an Assistant Vigilance Officer with the South Eastern Railway, the Army said yesterday.
Army’s Leh based Fire and Fury Corps said on the night of August 26, an Indo-Austrian-Australian-Poland mountaineering expedition to Mt Nun (7135 mtr) encountered heavy snowfall, which resulted in the untimely demise of Kamal Mondal, Assistant Vigilance Officer, South Eastern Railway.
In a swift response, Army Aviation helicopters of the Fire and Fury Corps carried out a dignified evacuation operation to bring back the body of the fallen mountaineer.
“Fire and Fury Corps extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members and Indian Railways,” the Corps said on X.
Mt Nun, located in the Zanskar range of Ladakh, is one of the most challenging peaks in the Himalayas and has been the site of several international expeditions.—(UNI)
